Mother Mary being the mother of Jesus is also our mother. Her birthday is celebrated all over the world on 8th September. The feast is celebrated in a different manner in different parts of the world. It was a great joy to celebrate the birthday of our Mother Mary in St Joseph’s Seminary Mangalore according to the local culture and traditions which also includes the feast of harvest.
We began the celebration with the first Vespers on 7th September at 7.30 p.m. On 8th, at 6.15 am there was Festal Mass in Konkani presided over by Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop emeritus. Rev. Fr Naveen Pinto preached the word of God. In his homily, he emphasized the following: 1. Mother Mary was born with grace and sanctity (without original sin). 2. Mary is the masterpiece of world’s creation. 3. Mary brought the Messiah in the world. Further, he invited all to seek the intercession of Mother Mary and to follow her example.
After the breakfast there were some games conducted by the brothers of Konkani academy for both students and the staff. There was a festal meal at 12.30 pm. Rev. Fr Ronald Serrao, the Rector, explained the significance of the festal meal and said grace on it. There were 17 varieties of dishes. Some were very sweet and some sour. Rector said that different varieties of dishes symbolize the different aspects of our life. And we need to share the love joy and sadness of one another as a family.
