June 13, 2019: “Chosen from among men… appointed to act on behalf of men” (Heb 5:1).

sons were ordained as Deacons. After seven years of Formation and ecclesiastical studies
in the St. Joseph’s Seminary the candidates, Br Royson Antony (Diocese of Calicut), Br
Anuranjan Bilung (Diocese of Ranchi), Br Sumit Xalxo (Diocese of Ranchi), Br Lancy
D’souza (Diocese of Mangalore), Br Joe Bosco (Diocese of Kannur), Br Rosario

Mangalore) Br Ranjit Kispotta (Diocese of Raigarh), Br Steevan Joel (Diocese of

Saldanha, Bishop of Diocese of Mangalore during the solemn Eucharistic celebration at
St. Joseph’s Interdiocesan Seminary today, June 13, 2019 at 3.00 pm.
Most. Rev. Dr Peter Paul, Bishop of Mangalore, presided over the Holy Eucharist,
concelebrated by Priests of various dioceses. Rev. Fr Ronald Serrao, the Rector of the
Seminary, called out the candidates by name to be ordained by the Bishop as Deacons. In
His Homily, His Excellency instructed the ordinandi with the word of God, spelled out
the role of a deacon in the Catholic Church. He called the deacons to do the will of God
generously and to serve God and mankind in love and joy.
Addressing the deacons Bishop reminded that they are the ministers of the word of God
and they have to express in action what they proclaim the good news to the whole world
and humanity. As we look in the gospel of St Mark 16:15 “Go into the entire world and
proclaim the good news to the whole creation”. After the homily the candidates pledged
in front of all the faithful the oath of celibacy and obedience. The seminary choir led the
litany of the saints and invoked God’s blessings upon the deacons. Following the
traditions of the Catholic Church in ordaining deacons, the Bishop in silence laying his
hands upon the candidates, invoked the blessings of the Holy Spirit. The rite of
investiture took place, thereafter the Book of the Gospel is handed to them and making
them heralds of the gospel of Christ.
This event was witnessed by religious sisters of various congregations, parents, relatives,
friends and well wishers of deacons. The faithful experienced the presence of divine love
and grace in the celebration. The newly ordained deacons expressed their thankfulness to
the Rector, staff and students of St. Joseph’s Seminary for their well knit co-operation
and making this ceremony a memorable one.
